Healing the Root Chakra so You Can Improve Your Health
The root chakra or Muladhara (Sanskrit) is the energy centre in the body situated at the base of the spine. It corresponds to the colour and frequency of the colour red and has various themes including stability, security, finances, and family. This energy centre revolves around your sense of stability and security and how you see yourself in the world. It is the energy centre responsible for grounding your universal energies to Earth and ensuring that you have two feet firmly placed on the ground.
Imbalances in this energy centre can lead to disease in the genitals, blood, bones, legs and feet. It is from this energy centre that you take through life your securities or insecurities, whether you’re in flight-fright mode or whether you have a stable place to stay. These energies start forming at birth and develop until around the age of seven.
Healing of the root chakra can take many forms depending upon whether the issues are emotional, spiritual, mental or physical. Signs to look out for include:
- Fear
- Mistrust of Yourself and Others
- Lack of money or stress over money
- Strong independence
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Sense of ungroundedness or dizziness in your days
- Poor eating habits: don’t eat or overeat
- Leg or feet problems
- You’re a hoarder
- Weight gain especially bottom half of the body (thighs, belly)
A blocked root chakra means the energy flow is stagnant or underactive. Signs of an underactive root chakra include:
- Feeling ungrounded, scattered or not present
- Anorexic
- Chronic constipation
- Unstable
- Constantly moving homes
- Clutter everywhere
- Fearful
- Nervousness
- Insecure
- Issues with bones, skin, knees
The root chakra energy can also be overactive or excessive so there is too much energy flow. Signs of an overactive root chakra include:
- Resisting change
- Hoarding
- Greedy
- Materialistic
- Addictions to Money and/or Sex
- Obesity
- Depression
- Laziness
- Issues with the knees, feet, bowels, blood or bones
Healing of the root chakra is dependent upon the issues presented. However, as this is a general blog any of these activities may help to improve the flow of the energy of the root chakra.
- Root Chakra Meditation
The use of meditation is very effective in helping to heal the energy flow of the root chakra. There are several types of root chakra meditations available on YouTube including sound healing meditations, guided meditations and more.
- Sound Therapy
Sound therapy is a great way to balance the root chakra using drumming or the didgeridoo. There are plenty of drumming meditations on YouTube you can try.
- Colour Healing
Wearing the colour red with intention can be effective in helping the energy flow. Visualising the colour red at the base of the spine becoming brighter and brighter will help to centre and balance this chakra.
- Exercise
Any exercise will help to realign the root chakra. One of the most effective exercises is Yoga. Poses such as Warrior Pose, Child’s Pose, and Mountain Pose are great for this chakra.
- Consume Grounding Foods
Foods such as potato, carrot, yams- anything that comes from the Earth.
- Practice Mindfulness. You can find more about Mindfulness Practices here.
- Use crystals that are effective for grounding or are the colour red. These include hematite, red jasper, carnelian, ruby, smoky quartz and bloodstone.
A balanced and optimal root chakra will leave you feeling calm, strong, stable, present and grounded.
